Mississippi State Fires Head Coach Zach Arnett After Less Than a Season
Departure Comes Amidst Disappointing Season and Off-Field Issues
Arnett's Short Tenure Ends with Bulldogs Struggling on and off the Field
Mississippi State University has announced the firing of football coach Zach Arnett, effective immediately. The decision comes less than a full season into Arnett's tenure, as the Bulldogs have struggled both on and off the field.
Mississippi State entered the 2023 season with high hopes under Arnett, who was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach in December 2022. However, the team has struggled to find success, finishing with a 3-9 record in Arnett's first season.
In addition to the on-field struggles, Arnett has also faced off-field issues during his short time as head coach. In August, several Mississippi State players were arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident, leading to questions about the team's culture under Arnett.
With the Bulldogs currently in last place in the SEC West and facing a difficult remaining schedule, Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen has decided to make a change at head coach. Arnett will be replaced by interim head coach Tony Hughes, who previously served as the team's defensive coordinator.
